TRAINING DETAILS: Missing Pet Partnership will be holding a 5-day training event designed for anyone involved in lost pet recovery work. The first two days (Sat & Sun) will be classroom instruction with various speakers and on topics including complex cases, working airport searches, disaster animal response work, Facebook Admin tips, bone and scat identification, hands-on training with capture tools (net gun, Collarum, and snappy snare), dealing with difficult people, and trap demos. The following three days (Mon – Weds) will be hands-on dog training for both MAR cat detection and MAR trailing dogs. MAR K9 instructors include Kat Albrecht (British Columbia), Susannah Charleson (Texas), Pat Simmons (Florida), and Sam Connelly (Maryland). Observers (without search dogs) for the dog training portion of the boot camp are welcome (for a small fee). This training is open to anyone interested—you do not need to be a graduate of the Missing Animal Response course to attend any of this training. Dogs at all levels (including dogs with no lost pet recovery training) are welcome. Evaluations for dogs that have never been through a MAR evaluation will be offered the first day of dog training (Monday). Attendees are free to attend whichever portion of training they prefer (classroom only, dog training only, or both classroom and dog training).
Saturday and Sunday will be registration and coffee at 8:30 AM and sessions going from 9 – 5
FEES: To keep costs as low as possible, all K9 trainers and instructors are volunteering their time (none are being paid for their participation). The cost for the 2-day classroom training (which includes lunch) is $100.00 per person. The cost for the 3-day dog training (which does not include lunches) of 1 handler with 1 search dog is $275.00; the cost for 1 dog handler with 2 search dogs is $450.00. Cost for “Observers” (without dogs) for the 3-day dog training is $60.00.
SAFETY ISSUES: No aggressive dogs allowed. MAR dogs should have no major fear issues and no issues of aggression towards humans, cats, or other dogs. All dogs should be current on vaccinations and proof of Rabies vaccination must be provided when you register.
HOTELS / ACCOMODATIONS: We have secured a block of rooms with an incredible group rate of $94.00+ tax per night at the Quality Inn Mystic, 48 Whitehall Ave, Mystic, CT. The $25 fee per dog per night has been waived. When making reservations call 1-860-572- 8531 and mention that you’re with the group “Missing Pet Partnership.”
FRI EVENING CHECK IN / NETWORKING: On Friday evening May 19th (6:30 – 8:00 p.m.) we will have a table set up (at the hotel) to register / check in and a time for networking. We’ll have snacks and look forward to meeting you in person and answering questions that you have.
REGISTRATION: Saturday and Sunday along with coffee at 8:30AM
CLASSROOM TRAINING: (Sat May 20th – Sun May 21st): The 2-day classroom training event will be held inside the dog training center My Dog’s Place, located at 2 Avery St, Mystic, CT. During classroom training, dogs must be crated either inside the classroom area or inside your vehicle (weather permitted). We will take adequate breaks during classroom training for dog handlers to care for their dogs.
DOG TRAINING SITE: For the 3-day dog training event, we will meet each morning at 9:00 am at the North Stonington Fairgrounds located at 21 Wyassup Rd in North Stonington CT. There is plenty of shaded parking on site. Dogs may be contained in your vehicle or crated quietly near the working area. There are restrooms on site. Lunches will be on your own, breaks will be 90 minutes. More detailed directions and descriptions will be provided at the event.
AIRPORT: If you plan to fly in, the T. F. Green (Providence, Rhode Island) airport is the closest. Bradley Airport in Hartford is further away but is also an option.
PAYMENT: Payment in full is required at time of registration via PayPal. Refund policy: 50% refund if cancellation is more than 30 days prior to Boot Camp date. No refunds after April 20, 2017.
